Cavit Schempp of the Olympia FFA chapter was selected in June to compete for national recognition in a career development event at the 92nd National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, Oct. 30-Nov. 2. The Olympia FFA will send six members to Indianapolis as Schempp vies for national honors in the area of extemporaneous public speaking. American Farm Bureau Federation sponsors the event. Other FFA members who will attend include Noah Reber, Josie Litwiller, Elizabeth Davis, Rebekah Magee, and Kailey Little.  Bryce Hoffman is the chapter advisor. Extemporaneous public speaking is one of 25 career/leadership development event areas, covering jobs skills in everything from communications to mechanics. Event participants are given 30 minutes to prepare a speech on a general agricultural topic. The speech must be four to six minutes in length. At the conclusion of the speech, the judges may question the speaker for five minutes.  Finalists are selected based on speech delivery, content and responses to the questions. National participants will advance through preliminary and semifinal rounds with the top four speakers competing in the final national event.  CDEs and LDEs help students develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly and perform effectively in a competitive job market.
