After watching The Polar Express today, first grade students took on the challenge of building their own bridges.  We first studied the parts of a bridge, and then students planned the design of their bridge.  They constructed them out of all sorts of materials: U

nifix cubes, base ten blocks, craft sticks, paper cups, pattern blocks, and lots and lots of tape.  We then tested the bridges with toy train cars to see how much weight they would hold up.  Each group built a bridge that held six railroad cars and had a fun and noisy afternoon!
