OHS Blacklight Dance Becomes 80s Dance!

For the past 10 years, the OHS Student Council has hosted a Black Light Dance at the end of February in the OHS Cafeteria. From 7:30 to 10 PM, the students danced the night away.

While this was a source of entertainment and fun for our student body, it changed this year to an 80’s dance and students wondered why.

Dr. Jodlowski helped shed some light on this. “One of the discussions that I had with Student Council was that the black light dance had become somewhat of an opportunity for students to come and dance inappropriately, so Student Council might want to consider looking at something different. That was the suggestion I made to them and they came up with multiple ideas for it. They set the theme for the 80s and I said that was okay,” said Dr. Jodlowski.

Student Council made decisions on the decorations, costumes and music.  “Music was by Josh Ummel-- he did homecoming and prom.  Students usually love what he does.   80s music was the focus. People wore 80s attire and anything that glowed under the blacklights and decorations were black lights with black plastic, simple decorations,” said Mrs. Cooper, Student Council adviser.

Change is always hard. OHS is a school rooted in traditions, but one tradition won’t change--students love dances. Mrs. Cooper said that will still be what this dance is all about--having fun with friends and dancing.

Junior Delaney Brown said, “I had a lot of fun with my friends…”

Student Council and Dance Committee member, Emily Hunter, wants our student body to know, “Even though the name of the dance has been changed to the 80’s dance, it is generally the same as years prior.”

It seems that the dance formerly known as Black Light was still a great time for all students  to show off their 80s dance skills!
