This past weekend, The Olympia Historical Society visited Springfield. We toured Abraham Lincoln's house, the Old State Capitol, and Lincoln’s tomb. After seeing all of the sites in Springfield, we traveled to New Salem Park where we walked around log cabins and saw how the people during Lincoln’s era lived. It was such a beautiful day to visit these sites, learn the history behind them and learn about the everyday life of Lincoln.
- “Visiting the historic locations of Lincoln’s life left a really profound feeling of awe and we got a chance to peer into the past. At times it felt as though you were standing next to Lincoln himself.” ~ Aurora Bauer
- “It was just awesome being able to revisit some of the historical sites in Springfield after so many years. Being a Junior this year in American Studies and English III, it was really cool being able to connect the history I have been learning in those classes with the historical sites I visited. It was my first time going to New Salem Park this year, it was super fun and I’m glad for the friends I got to spend it with, Mrs. Stephan and Mr. Haak! ~ Mykala Swindle
- “I’m so glad I was able to go on this trip! I felt proud in our state for the first time in a long time, because other than the Yodeling Boy and Chicago, let’s be honest, Lincoln is all Illinois has. Despite only living an hour away, most of the places we went I had never even been to before. It was awesome getting that opportunity, especially since I was able to spend it with so many great people. Plus, I have the APUSH test coming up, and this little refresher probably didn’t hurt.” ~ Macy Walczer
