5th grade wanted to bring Brian's Winter to life by finishing the last couple chapters in the cold 🥶

It's easy to get distracted from homework (and life) when the phone never stops pinging and the next episode plays automatically. Let's set some common sense guidelines by signing this Family Media Agreement within your family: bit.ly/OlyAgree

This year, the Olympia National Honor Society is sponsoring a Toys for Tots Drive at the girls home basketball games on Nov 27th and 28th, against Prairie Central, then Dee-Mack. New toys or cash donations are appreciated! Bring your family and friends to enjoy the games and help support your local Toys for Tots!

Reminder: Today Wednesday, November 1st is an Early Release Day for Olympia students. OHMS students dismiss at 11:30, Elementary students dismiss at noon.

Ms. Metz's second graders completed a Halloween STEM activity. They were to create haunted houses, complete with three ghosts! The only criteria was that they had to use all 20 cups and all 3 ghosts had to be on the very top of their house. Every group's haunted house design was unique, and all groups met the criteria! Very creative, second graders!!!

First graders in Mrs. Gray's classes reviewed the emotional zones of regulation...Halloween style! We found Frankensteins around the room and labeled their emotions. We also read "Gustavo the Shy Ghost" by Flavia Z. Drago and discussed what zones Gustavo was in throughout the book. Afterwards, we revisited our Frankenstein feelings and colored them by zone.

Other than straight-up cyberbullying, what are some other reasons our kids might be bummed by others' online behavior? Read more about ghosting, subtweeting, griefing (plus more), and learn some simple tips on how to handle these situations.

#DigCit Family Tip 6: Review worst-case steps.
Walk through what to do if your kid is being bullied online. First, step away. Ignoring a bully can be very effective. If the bullying continues, take screenshots or print out evidence. Then block the person. If it gets worse, report the behavior to a trusted adult. Talk about who those people are and make sure your kid has their contact information.

Ms. Metz's second graders impressed Dr. Spencer today with what they already knew and learned in class about the three states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases). Dr. Spencer then shared even more information and super cool simulations! We LOVE Science!!!

For kids, miscommunication is a common occurrence online and on social media. Plus, being behind a screen makes it easier to say things they wouldn't say in person. So how do we help kids avoid the pitfalls of digital drama? Hear it from the source!

Today Mrs. Gray's class was given a reminder lesson on good handwashing by nursing students from ISU Mennonite College of Nursing. The students had fun with games and learning to help keep Olympia South germ-free. Mennonite clinical students are here on Mondays this semester as part of their Pediatric and Community Classes.

Third graders at South have been learning about hurricanes and are putting their knowledge to the test! They are working through the STEM process to design a structure that will survive a hurricane. 🌀💨

#DigCit Family Tip 5: Take breaks.
If you notice your kid getting pulled into digital drama, help them take a break. It's great if they can determine for themselves when they need to step back, but they might need some help setting limits.
