Welcome Families & Students

This site is dedicated to assisting our Olympia families with technology related topics, issues, and guidelines relevant to your child's learning from K-12. The IT department and building media technologists strive to provide an environment that will support learning opportunities at school and home with the technology we have available. Please help support the at home learning environment by monitoring your child’s use of technology and reinforce many of the simple digital citizenship guidelines that are shared throughout the year via our Digital Citizenship campaign. Most importantly, designate a β€œscreen off” time each night.

If you are experiencing an issue with a device during remote learning, please contact us using the technology helpdesk phone line: 309-379-2843

We recognize the importance that Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) tools, particularly generative A.I., will have on the future of our students.  This is a rapidly growing field that our staff will be learning about and leading in our classrooms.  Our current stances and implementation can be found above.

Google Meet and Chat

Olympia utilizes Google Meet for online educational communication.  What are these tools, how can they be used for learning opportunities, and what details do you need to know as a parent or student? As of Fall 2021, Google Chat is no longer accessible by students.

Zoom

Zoom is used in two different ways in our district.  First, the Zoom app is preloaded on the K-2 iPads and is used by our lower elementary teachers during remote learning.  Second, the Zoom Android App can be manually installed onto high school chromebooks for use in a select number of courses that held off campus and require Zoom (i.e. BACC, Dual-credit, etc…).

This document explains details surrounding the district issued hotspots during remote learning. Additionally, options are provided that may assist if our hotspots are not providing enough bandwidth for video sessions.

By default, our filter blocks sites that are categorized as β€œSocial Networking”.  Sites that fall into this category include TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, etc…  Our filter also allows us more fine control over the following four sites: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.  The way that these sites are handled varies depending on where your child is in their educational journey at Olympia.  We do encourage all families to start discussing social media with their children at a young age.
