Making Galimotos

Our class read the book Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams about a young boy who lives in a village in Africa.  A galimoto can be a toy car, but it can also mean something made out of recycled materials. The boy, Condi,  has no toys, but goes throughout his village collecting bits of wire so that he can create his own galimoto.  We were discussing the comprehension strategy of connecting to the experiences of others to help understand the story, so students had a bag of miscellaneous materials that they then used to create their own galimotos.  Their creations included all kinds of ideas from popsicles to airplanes to exploding stars to drum sets.  After building their creations, students shared them with their classmates and then wrote about what they had made.  First graders did a great job of showing their creativity!
